Wintering: A Season With Geese Customer Reviews
:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from TheGannet -- A unique topic but not that enthralling : I was really looking forward to this book after reading the other reviews and seeing it had been critically acclaimed. However, while it was quite entertaining, I was left underwhelmed. It is certainly different from other nature books in that it focuses solely on geese. He covers all the different types of geese, though, which started getting tedious as it's not birds of prey or seabirds we're talking about here - it's geese!!! Also, much of the book covers his time spent in Scotland - which he repeatedly describes as a dreary, depressing country devoid of much hope. It is not actually as miserable a place to live in as he makes out. I also did not think his writing was particularly impressive - his overuse of excessively short sentences and comma splices started to grate on me after a while (probably as I had recently read a couple of superby written nature books by the peerless Stephen Moss). One major plus point of this book, though, is that his sheer enthusiasm for geese is infectious. I also liked the way he dropped in some interesting facts about the birds - he'd clearly done his research. The way he interweaves tales about the geese with stories about his own day-to-day life is also quite clever. The book is short and pretty easy to read. Overall, though, it's nothing out of the ordinary given the high quality of other nature books available these days. Geese are undeniably funny when they keep honking and their early-morning and late-night flights are certainly sights to behold but let's not get too excited, please! A solid three stars for sure. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from M. J. Hayden -- quick read : image on cover is beautiful ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 26, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Barry J. Nicolle -- An easy to read, informative book on wild geese : My only disappointment with the book, living near Castle Douglas about 10 miles from the author, is that he chose not to cover the Atlantic Light Bellied Brent geese (preferring the Russian dark Bellied variety in Norfolk - over 300 miles away) overwintering at Lochs Strangford and Ryan and the Taiga Bean geese on the Slamannan Plateau again much more locally. The latter apparently overwintered at Loch Ken until the 1980s when farming practices changed and they were forced further north. A few photos would have enhanced its appeal for me. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dangerous Dave -- Interesting book. : An enjoyable read about the authors drive to see wintering Geese in areas connected with his formative years. An interesting addition to this particular nature writing vein, but I felt it could have gone a bit deeper into both subjects of Bird and Author. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 27, 2021 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Sean W -- Disappointing : I was looking forward to reading this book, but found it to be mostly boring. To fill what is still a thin paperback the publishers double (?) spaced all sentences. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 24, 2020 )
